본 연구는 엔터테인먼트 컨텐츠 제작 네트워크 형성에 대한 매커니즘을 이해하고 그 속에서 발생하는 역할 역동성에 관한이해를 돕기 위해서 수행되었다. 연구자들은 2003년의 선행 연구에서 역할 역동성이 외부환경의 변화에 의해서 나타날수 있다고 주장했으며, 1991년~2000년 사이에 제작된 영화들을 대상으로 하는 실증분석을 통해서 환경이 급격하게 변하는 시기에는 역할 역동성을 겪은 네트워크의 성과가 역할 역동성을 겪지 않은 네트워크에 비해서 더 좋다는 결론을 도출한 바 있다. 이러한 선행 연구와 동일한 맥락에서, 본 연구에서는 2001년~2006년 사이에 제작된 영화를 대상으로 외부환경의 구조적인 변화가 일반화된 상황에서 영화제작 네트워크에서 발생한 역할 역동성의 심화 정도를 분석하고, 이런역할 역동성이 네트워크 조직의 성과에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는가를 실증적으로 재검증했으며, 나아가 특정한 환경적 제약조건(i.e., 메이저 배급사들의 영화제작 투자)이 주어졌을 때에도 이런 역할 역동성이 여전히 유효하게 나타나고 있는지를 실증적으로 검증함으로써 선행 연구에서 주장한 내용을 더욱 발전시킬 수 있었다.
Abstract
By analyzing role composition among producer, director, and screenwriter for project-based organizations in Korean film making industry during 2001-2006, this study empirically examined the concept of ‘role dynamics’ and its relationships with performance. Literature suggests that organizations tend to integrate homogeneous roles and separate heterogeneous roles as their environment changes more rapidly. Empirical results of this study show that film making organizations integrated homogeneous artistic roles of director and screenwriter but separated heterogeneous business role of producer. Moreover, films with the same person who played both roles of director and screenwriter but with different producer were found to be more successful than films with different persons played roles of producer, screenwriter, and director respectively. Empirical results of this study suggest that organizations may utilize role dynamics in order to adapt to changing environment.
