본 연구는 정치경제학 모형을 통해 국내 생명보험회사들이 방카슈랑스의 도입을 궁극적으로 용인하게 된 이유를 생명보험회사 로비의 노력을 통한 독점적 이윤 확보의 혜택 및 경쟁 부족으로 인한 산업 내 효율성 하락과 이에 따른 수익의 감소라는 비용의 측면에서 이론적으로 살펴보았다. 또한 DEA 기법을 이용하여 방카슈랑스 도입 이전과 이후의 비용효율성이 어떻게 변화하였는지를 19개 생명보험회사 전체 및 대형 3사, 중소형 보험사, 외국계 보험사의 3개 소그룹별로 각각 살펴봄으로써 논문의 이론적 모형의 타당성과 방카슈랑스의 효과에 대한 실증분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 생명보험회사 전체의 비용효율성이 방카슈랑스 도입 이후 시간이 흐를수록 지속적으로 개선되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 방카슈랑스로 인한 그룹별 비용효율성의 변화에 있어서 대형 3사의 경우는 그 정도가 매우 미미한 반면, 외국계 보험사와 특히 국내 중소형사의 경우 방카슈랑스 도입 이후 생명보험사의 비용효율성이 시간이 지남에 따라 계속 향상되고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This paper studies the introduction and effects of the bancassurance on the cost efficiency of Korean life insurance industry. Firstly, by using a political economy model, we study the theoretical reasoning why the life insurance companies eventually accepted the introduction of bancassurance business. The model shows that the insurance company optimally decides the degree of lobbying efforts on protecting the introduction of bancassurance by considering its costs and benefits, monopolistic rent, efficiency falls caused by lack of competition within life insurance industry. Secondly, we employ DEA techniques to investigate the changes in the cost efficiency before and after the introduction of bancassurance. The empirical results show that the cost efficiency of the overall life insurance industry has kept increasing since the beginning of bancassurance business. Furthermore, we find that the improvement is getting bigger for domestic small and medium life insurers than for foreign life insurers, while there is no significant improvement for large(that is, Big 3) life insurers.
