초록
The demand for legal translation has dramatically increased in Korea due to the growth in international trade, the opening of financial market, the strengthened enforcement of intellectual property law, etc. The quality of legal translation is particularly significant given the very nature of the legal texts involved in the process. Legal languages entail legal effects, which means any misinterpretation or mistranslation of a term or a passage could lead to a great deal of financial loss. Despite the urgent necessity for securing professional legal translators, neither systematic training courses nor educational programs have been developed in Korea. In recognition of this circumstance, this paper aims to suggest curriculum for the legal translation course, and expects the proposed curriculum to contribute to attracting substantial attention on legal translation from researchers and practitioners alike. To propose a specific teaching plan which shall be effectively applied to enhance students' translation competence in this field, this paper argues unique nature of legal texts, distinctive characteristics of legal translation, and the validity of employing functionalist approaches in the process of actual practice.
