초록
This paper proposes a new labeling system for Russian intonation structure. To this end, we first compare the ToBI system of English with the ToRI system of Russian from a critical point of view. We then propose a new labeling system for the Russian intonation structure. Here, focussing on the H*M boundary tones, we illustrate how an M tone could clarify possible ambiguity or incompleteness in a long distance calling, as illustrated earlier in the ToRI system as well. We also show that the M tones could occur in the middle of a boundary as well as at the end of a boundary. Moreover, a middle M tone leaves a pause long enough to set the boundary and it is thus different from the H*L boundary tones in function. In conclusion, the M tone is a useful device to properly describe the Russian labeling system, which would then make the break indicies of the ToBI system unnecessary.
