현금보유주순의 결정요인과 초과현금 보유기업의 특성에 관한 연구

초록
본 연구는 1986년부터 2005년까지 국내 상장제조기업에 대한 장기 시계열 횡단면자료를 이용하여 적정 현금보유수준과 초과현금보유에 따른 기업의 행동 특성에 대해 분석하였다. 실증결과 국내기업의 현금보유 의사결정은 절충이론과 순위이론에 의해 실증적으로 유의하게 설명될 수 있었으며, 목표 현금보유량에 기초한 절충이론이 보다 지배적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 경영자지분의 수준에 따라 기업의 현금보유가 영향을 받는 것으로 나타나 경영자의 대리인 문제가 현금보유 의사결정에 어느 정도 기여하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 적지 않은 기업들이 모형에서 예측된 수준 이상의 초과현금을 보유하고 있었으며, 많은 기업들은 초과현금수준을 상당히 지속적으로 유지하고 있었다. 그러나 자본지출로 측정된 투자는 지속적으로 초과현금을 보유한 기업에서 유의적으로 높게 나타나지 않아 잉여현금흐름가설과 다른 결과를 보였다. 한편, 장기간 초과현금을 보유한 기업의 향후 경영성과가 규모/업종에 따른 비교기업에 비해 오히려 유의적으로(10% 유의수준) 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 초과현금의 보유 자체가 보다 많은 투자행위를 유발하지는 않으며, 또한 지속적인 현금보유가 경영성과의 악화를 가져오지는 않는 것을 의미한다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the appropriate level of cash holding and the characteristics on excess cash firm using the cross sectional and time series data of Korean listed non－financial firms during 1986－2005. The empirical results show that the decision making of cash holding for Korean non－financial firms might be explained significantly by both tradeoff and pecking order theory, but tradeoff hypothesis based on target cash holdings has more dominant power than pecking order hypothesis. Meanwhile, the findings of our paper suggest that the level of cash holding also is affected from level of CEO ownership, and thus agency problem of CEO contributes partially to decision making of cash holdings for Korean firm. It also demonstrates that many firms have held excess cash holding level over cash holding estimated using model, and excess cash level of Korean firms, in fact, is persistent over time. However investment, which is measured as capital expenditure, for the firm with persistent excess cash holding is not highly significant, implying this finding suggests that it is different result from free cash flow hypothesis.
