다각화 연구에서의 시너지 논의의 문제점 및 개선방향

초록
다각화 연구에서 가장 핵심적인 논의사안 중의 하나는 시너지의 논리를 토대로 다각화전략이 성과에 미치는 영향을 규명하는 것이다. 이에 따라 상당수의 실증연구들이 관련다각화된 기업과 비관련다각화된 기업 간의 성과차이를 검증하고자 하였지만, 일치된 결과를 도출하지는 못했다. 이와 관련하여 기존의 연구들이 주로 방법론적인 차원에서 문제를 해결하고자 했던 것에 비해 본 논문에서는 논리상의 측면에서 접근하고 있다. 즉 다각화된 기업 내의 각 사업부문들이 처해 있는 상황과 이해가 서로 다르고, 이들 간의 관계가 복잡하게 얽혀 있음에도 불구하고 기존의 연구들은 사업부문들 간의 관련성이라는 단일 요인에 의해서만 시너지 효과를 설명하고자 하였기 때문에 제대로 된 결과를 도출하지 못했다는 것이 본 논문의 주장이다. 본 논문에서는 시너지의 잠재요인이 다양하게 고려될 필요가 있으며, 기업본부의 관리기제 역시 시너지의 잠재요인이 무엇인지에 따라 선별적으로 적용되어야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 기존의 논의가 지나치게 시너지의 긍정적인 측면만을 부각하고 있는데, 시너지 창출에 따르는 비용적인 측면도 함께 고려해야 한다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 이에 따른 본 논문의 의의는 방법론적인 사안을 중심으로 논의를 진행했던 기존의 연구관행에서 벗어나 논리적인 차원에서의 개선을 모색했다는 점에서 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The concept of synergy is especially used in diversification researches as a dominant logic that a difference in business portfolios of diversified firms produces the difference in synergy outcomes and subsequent performances. The researchers endeavor to figure out the synergy effect in empirical analyses by comparing the performances of relatedly and unrelatedly diversified firms. However, they could not find enough results consistent to establish the synergy logic. Some researchers obtain meaningful consequences, whereas others do not. Those divergent results are often ascribed to methodological defects. Distinct from existing deliberations, this study focuses on another possibility that creating synergy would not be affected by just a single isolated determinant, the relatedness among businesses, but would be resulted from the combined effects of various factors such as potential inducements, management systems, and negative influences. In conclusion, this study contributes to expanding the scope of the empirical researches by providing a theoretical development, not a methodological refinement.
