성별화된 이혼의 서사: 상실의 경험과 새로운 관계 형성의 의미화 과정을 중심으로
Gendered Narratives in Post-divorce: Women's and Men's Experiences of Loss and the Meaning of New Relationships

이혼에 대한 많은 연구들은 이혼 당사자들의 정신적인 고통이나 불행, 혹은 이혼 이후에 겪는 경제적, 사회적 어려움, 편견에 주목해 왔다. 그러나 이혼 이후에 여성과 남성이 부여하는 상실의 의미의 차이가, 이혼 이후 자아정체성의 형성 과정과 밀접하게 연관이 되는 과정에 주목한 연구는 부재하다. 이 논문은 30명의 이혼 남성 여성의 심층인터뷰를 통해서 이혼이후의 ‘상실’의 경험을 해석하는 방식에서 나타나는 젠더의 차이에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해서 얻은 주요한 결론은 다음과 같다. 많은 남성들이 이혼을 통해 겪는 ‘상실’의 경험은 ‘이상적인 결혼’을 유지하지 못한 것에 대한 분노 혹은 후회와 깊은 연관성을 가지며, 이는 가정을 유지하는 일차적인 책임이 여성에게 있다는 남성 중심의 시각 속에서 ‘이상적인 아내’를 만나지 못한 분노 혹은 후회와 밀접하게 결합이 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 많은 이혼 남성들의 ‘새로운 자아’의 정체화 과정은 남성 중심의 가족/결혼관계에 대해 근본적인 변화를 동반하지 못하는 한계를 갖는다. 남성들이 이혼을 ‘상실'의 경험으로 사고하는 반면에, 여성들은 결혼을 ‘상실’의 경험으로 이혼을 ‘자아상실’을 회복하고 새롭게 자신을 찾는 여정으로 지배적으로 묘사한다. 즉, 여성들은 결혼 자체에 대한 회의나 불평등한 젠더 관계에 대한 문제 제기 속에서 결혼 전에 가졌던 가치나, 믿음, 여성성에 대한 주요한 재해석을 동반하는 이혼 서사를 구성하고 있다. 많은 여성들은 결혼 생활에 대한 분노와 후회를 단순히 개인적인 남성에 대한 분노로서 의미화하는 것이 아니라 가부장제 관계에서 침묵 당해온 여성의 목소리를 획득하는 결정적인 감정의 기제로서 표출하고 있다.
Abstract
This article explores the different meanings that women and men attach to loss and change after divorce. The loss of a ‘marital relationship' is certainly a stressful life event for both divorced men and women. Yet the experience of ‘loss' is made sense of differently by men and women and linked to their gendered narratives of a ‘new self'. This article is based on qualitative research of 17 women and 13 men. Compared to men’s narratives which did not talk about losing themselves in marriage, women’s question about the unequal basis of marriage and their anger to attribute to their loss of self through their marital experience becomes the basis to reconstruct their self, raising the question about their beliefs and knowledge which promised their happy life in marriage. To understand women's and men’s different ways of interpreting their past highlights how divorce is not the same event to women and men but it brings different subjective experiences dependent on the social context. These different subjective experiences are particularly captured through gendered narratives of a ‘new self' in relation to divergent meanings of loss and change, new relationships, and also difficulties they encounter.
