Local Environmental Governance for Economic Development: A Schenectady Case of Brownfield in New York

This research examines American local environmental governance's direct and indirect involvement to solve local environmental issues and to improve local economy in the promotion of the citizen participation and the aids of federal and state governments. The City of Schenectady's brownfield redevelopment in New York is analyzed as the case of local environmental governance for local economic development. American local environmental governance reacts to the trends of citizens' participation and civic engagement for local sustainable economic development in environmental decision making processes. This study shows that local environmental governance is a growing important strategic collaboration of a variety of stakeholders in solving local environmental problems and considering a long-term local economic development. This case study has encouraged additional research that helps clarify and understand the importance of environmental governance for drawing federal fund(EPA) to brownfield redevelopment.
