존재와 인식의 딜레마 ― 아리스토텔레스의 [형이상학] M권 10장의 결론을 중심으로 ―

초록
아리스토텔레스에게 근원(archē)적 존재인 실체(ousia)는 독립적인 개체이다. 그리고 실체 이외의 모든 존재는 실체에 의존한다. 그러므로 존재의 질서를 이해하기 위해서는 존재의 기초가 되는 실체를 알아야만 한다. 반면에 지식의 대상은 개체가 아닌 보편이다. 그런데 실체는 존재론적 요구에 따라 개체이어야 하며 동시에 인식의 대상이 되기 위해서는 보편이어야 한다는 문제가 발생한다. 아리스토텔레스는 이것을 『형이상학』 M권 10장에서 최대의 난제라고 부르면서 자세한 설명없이 간략한 결론만을 언급하고 있다. 결론의 요지는 지식의 대상이 가능태(dunamis)에서는 보편이지만 현실태(energeia)에서는 개별이라는 것이다. 지금까지 대부분의 연구자들은 이 결론을 무시하거나 인식론적 관점에서 이해하는데 그치고 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 이 결론의 의미를 명료하게 밝히고, 이것이 최대의 난제에 대한 결론일 뿐만 아니라 아리스토텔레스 존재론의 중요한 일면을 보여주고 있음을 드러내는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 인식을 하나의 존재론적 사태로 보고 인식대상과 인식주체가 인식의 가능태와 현실태에서 어떤 존재론적 위상을 갖는지 분석하였다.
Abstract
Ousia, the principle(archē) of being, is an independent individual for Aristotle. All beings other than substance depend on the substance. So we need to know substance, the basis of being, to understand the order of beings. On the other hand, the object of knowledge is not individual but universal. Ontology requires that substance should be individual, but it should be universal in order to be the object of knowledge. Aristotle calls this the biggest dilemma, and he makes a short conclusion without further detailed explanation in his Metaphyscis, M, 10. His conclusion can be summarized: the object of knowledge is universal in potency(dunamis) but individual in act(energeia). Most scholars have ignored the conclusion or at best understood it from epistemological point of view. This essay is focused on elucidating the meaning of the conclusion and on showing that it is not only the conclusion of the biggest dilemma but also an important aspect of Aristotle's ontology. For this, I consider knowledge as an ontological affair, and I analyze which ontological status the object and subject of knowledge have in potency and act of knowing.
