이주초기 재미한인 중학생의 학교 적응에 있어 대처 및 사회복지 서비스 욕구에 대한 연구

지속되는 미국 이주 청소년들의 양적 증가에 비해 정작 이들의 적응에 가장 많이 영향을 끼치는 미국 학교생활에서의 초기 적응에 대한 경험을 실제적으로 탐색한 연구는 미비하다. 본 연구는 미국으로 이주한 한인 중학생들이 그들의 초기 6개월간의 학교적응에 있어 경험하게 되는 상황들에 어떻게 대처하였는지, 또한 그러한 경험들 가운데 학교 사회복지사 등에게 전문적인 도움을 받았더라면 학교적응에 훨씬 도움이 되었을 욕구영역은 어떤 것인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이러한 연구 목적 달성을 위하여 미국 거주 기간 2년 이내의 총 10명의 학생들을 대상으로 한 심층 면접을 통한 자료 수집과 근거 이론의 지속적 비교분석을 활용한 범주화를 통하여 자료를 질적 분석하였다. 연구결과로 대상자들의 학교 적응에 있어서의 대처를 수업시간과 교실, 친구 관계, 교사와의 관계, 학교의 규칙과 시스템의 4가지 분야, 그리고 사회복지 서비스 욕구로 나누어 각각의 상위 및 하위 범주들을 도출하고, 수집된 원 자료에서의 인용문을 통하여 실질적 상황으로 제시하였다. 본 연구는 미국 내 한국 중학생들이 그들의 미국 학교 초기 적응에 있어 대처, 사회복지 서비스를 중심으로 한 전문적 도움을 필요로 하는 분야에 대한 파악을 통하여 미국학교 내 학교사회복지 서비스 계획을 위한 기초 이해 자료로서 기능하며, 급격한 다문화 현상을 경험하고 있는 한국 내 다문화가족 및 타 문화에서 온 청소년 학생들의 한국 학교 적응에 있어 효과적인 전문적 서비스 개입에의 간접적 시사점이 되고자 하는 활용목적을 가진다.
Abstract
This exploratory and qualitative study was conducted to investigate how Korean junior high students coped or responded with situations during their initial 6 months' American school adjustment as well as what they thought as help seeking needs in terms of areas that would be helpful if they received from service providers like school social workers. 10 participants who stayed in the U. S. within 2 years were sampled and were interviewed. Data were analyzed by consistent comparison to figure out categories in the grounded theory perspective. Findings were organized in two main areas; coping and social work service needs. In coping area, there were 4 different sub-areas(study/classes, peer relationship, teacher relationship, and school rules/systems). Additionally, social work service needs they would have wanted were analyzed by 3 different categories. All categories were explained with specific and real narratives from the raw data as examples for each category for the practical understanding. This study would be utilized as basic information to understand Korean junior high students' initial school experience in American schools and necessary areas for school social work service intervention. Furthermore, this study could give useful ideas for the student service providers at Korean schools working with diverse students having multi-cultural background in the context of cultural competent practice.
