낮은 자기통제력과 비행기회요인들의 오프라인 및 온라인 비행에의 영향 비교: 일반이론의 검증

Gottfredson and Hirschi's a general theory of crime has been tested and supported with a considerable amount of interest among criminologists. According to this theory, low self-control can explain all kinds of crime. However, its applicability to online delinquency has been neglected in empirical studies. This study tests their theory to explain both offline and online delinquency. This study focuses on the issue whether both low self-control and opportunity have significant effects on offline and online delinquency and also tests whether the interaction effects between low self-control and opportunity factors are significant. This study considers four opportunity factors(the perceived benefit from delinquency, the perceived costs in relationship with others, the perceived certainty of punishment, and parental supervision) and examines their independent and interaction effects with low self-control. Using data from 715male and female middle school students in Seoul, this study tests several hypotheses. Results show that the effect of low self-control on both offline and online delinquency is significant and also some opportunity factors have significant effects on delinquency. However, results reveal that the effect of low self-control is larger on online, but the effects of opportunity factors are larger on offline. It is found that the interaction effects between low self-control and opportunity factors are small.
