한국 생명보험 산업부문 외국기업과 현지기업의 상호경쟁행위 차이에 대한 실증적 검증
An Empirical Analysis on the Interactive Competitive Behaviors Between Foreign and Domestic Firms in Korean Life-insurance Industry

본 연구는 해외시장에 진출한 외국계 다국적 기업들과 국내 기업들의 경쟁행위(competitive behaviors)에서 나타나는 특징적인 차이들을 제시하여 경쟁역학 분야의 연구 발전에 기여하고, 해외 시장에 진출하는 다국적기업들과 이와 같은 다국적기업들의 공격적인 자국시장진입에 직면하는 현지기업의 경영자들에게 효율적인 경쟁을 위해 도움이 될 수 있는 실무적 차원의 시사점을 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 이와 같은 목적을 위해 다양한 경쟁행위들을 공격행위와 이에 대응하는 반응행위로 나누어 각 행위별로 외국계 기업들과 국내 기업들의 상호집단 간 특성 차이에 대한 가설들을 수립하고, 국내 생명보험 산업에서 경쟁하고 있는 외국계 기업들과 국내 기업들의 다년간의 경쟁행위 자료를 조사하여 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과는 외국계 기업들이 국내기업들에 비해 보다 공격적인 성향을 나타내고, 경쟁자의 공격에 대한 대응에 있어서는 상대적으로 적은 정도의 반응과 느린 의사결정속도를 보여주고 있다. 하지만, 공격이나 대응행위의 실행속도에서는 두 집단 간에 유의미한 차이가 없음을 나타내고 있다.
Abstract
This research addressed the question of how foreign firms differ in their competitive behaviors from local rivals in an industry. Predictions were tested with a sample of 12 major life insurance companies in Korea over 9 years, from 1999 to 2007. Results support that the existence of differences in competitive behaviors between foreign firms and local firms. Foreign firms more aggressively initiated competitive actions and they were less likely and slower to respond when attacked by rivals. Contrary to predictions, there exists no significant difference between groups in both action and response execution speed.
