Historical Propositions for the Contemporary Public Arts and Design in Urban Contexts

One of the major objectives of writing this article is to enable urban planners and designers to achieve a deeper understanding of what kinds of design styles constitute the contemporary public design practices that they are engaged in. This paper attempt to make an inquiry to determine the historical and contextual influences that shape the theory and practice of the public arts and design. Modernism has laid a foundation for searching of alternative public design theories and perspectives. Realism, Impressionism, Cubism and etc. were all integrated into the contexts of the Modernism. Post-modernism, came after Modernism, also try to encompass a diverse thread of styles, paradigms, and trends that can be useful in a variety of public arts and design contexts. This paper presents a diverse and diffusive paradigms in post-modernism thoughts that elucidate the nature of diversity in contemporary public arts and design perspectives. Our guest for a more responsive and progressive framework for the public arts and design will be nurtured and realized in the broader yet dynamic urban environment of globalization, facilitated by human-oriented planning philosophies.
