Although there are lots of foreigners in Japan, they do not have a right to vote yet. It is true that a deep-rooted 'one ethnic myth' still exists in Japanese community. A lawsuit against political rights has been filed, mainly by Korean resident in Japan, but it was turned down all the time. Gradually, however, European judicial interpretation and conventional wisdom of immigrant franchise issue have been accepted in Japan. It might be difficult to give political rights to them in a case of national election like presidential election, but highly possible when it comes to local elections. Yet, due to the fact that conventional wisdom takes the notion of 'acceptance theory˚AE which says legal whether political rights is given to immigrant or not, current circumstance that immigrant do not have political rights is legally acceptable. The immigrant franchise issue becomes increasingly prominent as Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan[DPJ] takes power from nearly 50-year-governed Liberal Democratic Pary[LDP].
