특허취득 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 효과 분석
The Effect of the Patent Acquisition on the Management Performance

본 연구는 한국특허정보원(2009)이 보유한 자료 중 1996년부터 2005년까지 10년 사이 특허출원 및 특허등록한 128개 상장기업 연구표본으로 특허취득 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공동특허 취득이 경영성과에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 타 기업 또는 연구소와 공동으로 특허를 취득하려는 활동이 단독으로 특허를 취득하려는 활동보다 성장성과 수익성에서 우월한 경영성과가 있음을 발견하였다. 이는 기업이 특허출원 전후에 발생하는 높은 위험과 막대한 비용을 고려할 때 공동특허가 단독특허보다 위험과 비용을 더 효율적으로 분산할 수 있고 마케팅 등 사업화단계를 통한 경영성과 획득시 공동특허가 단독특허보다 수익을 더 능률적으로 창출할 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 Gold(1975)의 연구를 지지한다. 둘째, 하이텍기업이 경영성과에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 하이텍기업의 특허취득 활동이 로텍기업의 특허취득 활동보다 성장성과 수익성에서 우월한 경영성과가 있음을 발견하였다. 이는 하이텍기업이 로텍기업보다 더 우수한 품질의 특허를 보유함으로서 경영성과 향상에 기여하고 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 Chan, Martin and Kensinger(1990)의 연구를 지지한다. 셋째, 투자규모가 경영성과에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 특허등록을 위하여 투자한 자금의 규모가 큰 기업이 그렇지 않은 기업보다 성장성과 수익성에서 우월한 경영성과가 있음을 발견하였다. 이는 특허등록을 위하여 연구개발 등에 투자하는 규모가 클수록 투자효과가 큼을 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 Branch(1974), Grabowski and Mueller(1978), 최정호(1994) 등의 연구를 지지한다.
Abstract
The paper has selected and analyzed the research sample of 128 listed companies which applied and registered for the patent to the Korea Institute of Patent Information(KIPI: http://www.kipi.or.kr) in order to verify the effect of the patent acquisition on the firm performance. The result of research are as follows. First, the result shows us that the joint acquisition of the patent has a positive impact on the firm performance. From the viewpoint of its risk and expected cost, it is much advantageous to process patent acquisition project together with other firms or research center rather than to do solely. The research result is similar with those of Gold(1975). Second, the impact of high-tech company's patent on its performance is bigger than that of low-tech company's. The research result is similar with those of Chan, Martin and Kensinger(1990). Third, if the amount of investment in the patent acquisition project is big enough, then its impact on performance is langer than that of company investing smaller amounts in patent project. The research result is similar with those of Branch(1974), Grabowski and Mueller(1978).
