자르기 체험을 이용한 타이포그래피 디자인

초록
디자인은 훈련과정이다. 디자인 수업의 고유한 속성은 디자인 작업 과정으로 귀결된다. 디자인의 완성도는 창의적인 능력의 유무보다는 얼마나 체계적인 훈련을 받았는가와, 그것을 활용하고 소화할 수 있는 능력이 있었는가에 따라 달라진다는 것이 논자의 믿음이다. 타이포그래피 디자인에 대해 디자인 전공 학생이 받는 첫 인상은 ‘무엇인지 잘 모르겠음’, ‘들어는 봤는데 정확히는 모르겠음’, 혹은 ‘글자 디자인인 것 같음‘ 등이다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 학생들에게 ’자르기‘라는 매우 단순한 체험을 활용하여 디자인하는 방법을 훈련함으로써 ’타이포그래피 디자인에 대해 잘 알고 있음‘의 반응과 변화를 이끌어내는 것이다. 이를 위한 훈련과정으로 글자의 ’읽기(reading)‘와 ’쓰기(writing)‘ 본연의 기능 외에도 ’보임(be seen)’과 ‘그림(be drawn)‘의 기능을 부여하고 탐색함으로써 타이포그래피 디자인을 쉽고 빠르게 접하고, 지속적인 흥미를 유지할 수 있도록 하는 방법을 연구하였다. 훈련의 과정으로 세 가지 방법이 제시되었으며, 잡지를 이용한 자르기 타이포그래피, 글자 트리밍을 이용한 타이포그래피, 그리고 글자 자르기를 이용한 타이포그래피의 방법과 함께 다양한 디자인이 제시되었다.
Abstract
It is difficult to classify typographic design for those who have no prior experience in making designs because the typographic design is something which is formed by the design process and has not existed in advance of it. This study develops a training program that helps students practice simple activities such as cutting, trimming, and severing activities for typographic design. The training program consists of three activities for the work by design students. The first activity is cutting out types from magazine to collect ready made typographic elements, for the layout the elements of types on the paper. The second activity is trimming a letter with smaller square to collect the partial pieces of the letter. These are the sources for pattern typographic design. The third activity is severing letters into many pieces then students can combine, separate, and move the pieces so that can create new typographic designs.
