코스닥시장 상장법인의 연구개발투자가 영업성과와 기업가치에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 코스닥기업의 연구개발투자가 영업성과와 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 관하여 분석하였다. 구체적으로는 1997년~2007년의 기간에 대해, 코스닥기업의 연구개발투자가 기업가치 및 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 분석으로 일반회귀분석과 패널분석을 사용하였다. 또한, 코스닥 전체기업을 대상으로 한 분석의 추가분석으로 표본기업을 코스닥시장의 IPO 기업만을 대상으로 한정하여 연구개발투자가 기업가치 및 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석하고, 코스닥기업의 특허취득 공시의 효과에 대해 분석하였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과, 연구개발투자가 기업가치를 증가시키고, 이러한 효과는 기업지배구조 차원에서 이사회를 높게 평가받는 기업에서 더 높은 민감도를 보이고 있다. 기업지배구조점수가 좋고, 기업규모가 크며, 매출액 증가율이 큰 기업에 있어서는 연구개발투자가 영업성과에 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고, IPO 기업만을 대상으로 한 분석에서는 IPO에서 조달된 자금이 연구개발투자를 통해서 기업성과를 높이는데 기여하지 못 하였고, 특허취득의 공시에 대한 시장반응도 유의적이지 않았다. 이러한 분석 결과는 연구개발투자가 기업성과로 연결되기 위한 조건이 어떠한 것인지에 대해서, 그리고 연구개발투자가 기업에 대한 종합적 평가지표인 기업가치에 긍정적으로 작용하고 있다는 점을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper, from the perspective of firm value and operating performance, analyzes the effect of R&D expenditures of the non‐financial firms listed on the KOSDAQ market. The primary findings are summarized as follows:Using a sample of non‐financial firms listed on the KOSDAQ market over the 1997～2007period, the test results indicate that R&D investments have a positive impact on the firm value measured by Tobin’s Q, and the operating performance of the R&D investments depends significantly on corporate governance, firm size, and revenues growth rate. We employ the corporate governance index as a measure of corporate governance level. The measure is provided by the Korea Corporate Governance Service. We do not, however, document a consistent relation between R&D expenditures and firm value or operating performance at the time of IPO, and the impact of public announcement of obtaining a patent. The results from our analysis suggest that the correlation between Tobin’s Q or operating income and R&D investments is significant and positive for the group of firms with high corporate governance index, high firm size, and high revenues growth rate, and therefore good corporate governance and firm characteristics are essential to increase the firm value with R&D investments.
