생성적 디자인을 이용한 가구디자인의 특성에 관한 연구 - 프랙탈 기하학과 보로노이 다이어그램을 적용한 가구디자인을 중심으로 -

자연을 닮고자 하는 인간의 욕망은 가구 디자인에 있어서도 예외가 아니며, 과거의 자연 모사(nature-decorative) 수법을 비롯하여 최근에는 자연계의 생성원리를 적용한 자연 모사(bio-adaptive)를 통해 보다 더 근원적인 디자인 접근방식들이 나타나고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 자연계 생성적 디자인의 대표적인 이론인 프랙탈 기하학과 보로노이 다이어그램을 이용한 가구 디자인의 사례들을 조사하여 이러한 원리들의 적용방식과 그 특성을 살펴봄으로써 가구 디자인에 나타난 생성적 디자인의 가능성을 확장하는데 있다. 프랙탈의 조형원리인 중첩, 스케일링, 반복과 점증, 변형, 왜곡과 보로노이 다이어그램의 조형 특성인 개체 분화, 변이적 패턴, 반복․점증, 모호한 경계 등의 특징을 통해 가구 디자인에서도 새로운 디자인 개념과 형태를 창조하고 있다. 2000년 이후 생성적 디자인의 원리를 적용한 가구디자인 작품들을 살펴본 결과 그 적용 방식은 알고리즘을 이용한 형태 창발, 생성적 디자인 원리에 기초한 전통적인 프로세스, 생성적 디자인 패턴 모사의 세 가지 유형으로 구분할 수 있다. 자연계 생성 원리에 대한 생물학적 재해석과 새로운 원리에 대한 탐구는 가구 디자인 분야에 있어서도 새로운 디자인 접근 방식과 새로운 형태 창조의 무한한 가능성을 열어 줄 것이다.
Abstract
Furniture design is no exception to human desire for pursuit of the nature. In various design fields, it has turned out nature-decorative method in the past, and also recently it has turned out bio-adaptive method which is more root design process using principal of generation in nature world. The purpose of this study is to analyze application methods and characteristics of fractal geometry and voronoi diagram which are most representative principals of generative design in nature by research on the example of furniture design using these principals. The results of having analyzed furnitures by generative design can be summarized as follows; design principals of fractal; superposition, scaling, repetition & gradation, deformation, distortion and voronoi diagram; individual speciation, variational patten, repetition‧gradation, ambiguous boundary create new design concept and emergent form in furniture design. Application methods are ‘form emergence by algorithm’, ‘conventional process based on principals of generative design’, and ‘reproduction of pattern from generative design’. Biological reinterpretations and new explorations of principals of nature generation offer unbounded possibilities for furniture design.
