The Roles of Character's Functionality and Character's Attractiveness on Emotional Response of Spectators

The film as a representative entertainment that is presented audio-visually seeks emotional responses rather than rational responses from spectators by using characters who behave under the focuses of communicating the narratives. Character plays a major role in forming of emotional responses from spectators by communicating narrative related to core meaning which film production uses to develope the film. Without considering the character as a mediator the success of film is impossible. Spectators could identify with the character to be proxy who express spectator's thought or values. The purposes of this study is to explore the factors that affect empathy and sympathy induced by characters of the film. This study focuses on emotional responses and distinguishes between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy stems from the perspective of an observer who is conscious of another's feeling, empathy stems from that of a participant who merges with another's feeling. So sympathy is of cognitive thinking and empathy is of affective feeling. Based on these differences, we explore the roles of character's functionality and character's attractiveness on response of spectators. The character's functionality and the character's attractiveness are explored as factors necessary to induce emotional responses and are set forth as bases of developing hypotheses combined to construct research model. And as factors that influence the character's functionality, character's capability, activity and output are found, and as factors that influence the Character's Attractiveness, character's prestige, and similarity, distinctiveness are found.
