The current paper examines the following four theoretical paradigms that have led the development of macro organization theory in terms of their key arguments, implications, and limitations: resource dependence theory, economics of organization, neo-institutional theory, and organizational ecology. Organization theory is generally regarded as one of the most diverse, inter-disciplinary, dynamic, and theoretically profound fields that constitute the field of management. With the decline of contingency theory that had dominated the field of organization theory for the previous two decades, multiple organization theory paradigms emerged almost simultaneously about the mid 1970s, such as resource dependence theory, economics of organization, neo-institutional theory, organizational ecology, network theory, organizational learning theory, loose coupling theory, and garbage can theory. Among them, the current paper focuses on resource dependence theory, economics of organization, neoinstitutional theory, and organizational ecology, all of which are regarded to represent the idiosyncratic characteristics of macro organization theory. In so doing, the current paper aims to aid the systematic understanding of the structure and development process of the organization theory field which is highly dynamic and pluralistic.
