A Study on the Characteristics of the Print Design by Pucci

Emilio Pucci was a designer who succeeded in fashion design because of his unique and gorgeous prints. He designed a variety of exotic prints with brilliant colors getting inspiration from lots of elements such as the trip around the world, architecture or fine arts of the Renaissance period and the beautiful scenery and the characteristic scenes of everyday life of Italy. The purpose of this study is to present a methodology for developing print design by extracting the characteristics of Pucci's print design from those elements grouped into 4 classes and investigated how they inspired Pucci's print design. As a method of the study, visual and textual data were investigated for Pucci's fashion and print design especially focusing on those elements which influenced on his print designs. Pucci was born to an illustrious Florentine aristocratic family in 1914. He was a designer, businessman and a politician in Italy. His career as a fashion designer started designing ski wear and he became a designer symbolizing style and status in the sixties. His creative and quality printed patterns led Pucci style into a great success. The elements that inspired Pucci's print were the natural scenery and traditional culture of Italy, fine arts, exotic and ethnic things from traveling, and inspiration from sports and the space. The characteristics of Pucci's print design were exquisite and distinctive shape, kaleidoscopic color, and endless moving image. His successful case could be a good model for designers especially focusing on print design.
