This paper analyzes the effect of competition factors on balanced performance and moderating effect of both port characteristics and customer service of container terminal. Competition factors of container terminal are classified as equipment, operational efficiency, cost competence, and sub operating system. Port characteristics are sorted as geographical location, facility and service, and supporting system. According to results, the equipment factor of container terminal gives significant positive effect on financial, internal process, and learning & growth performance. The operational efficiency factor gives significant positive effect on internal process and learning & growth performance of container terminal. Both cost competence, and sub operating system factors give significant positive effect only on internal process performance. Geographical location characteristic of a port shows significant moderating effect on relationships of the equipment factor and financial performance, the equipment factor and internal process performance, the cost competence factor and internal process performance, the sub operating system factor and internal process performance respectively. The facility and service characteristic of port shows no significant moderating effects. Supporting system characteristic shows significant moderating effect on both the relationship of the equipment factor and financial performance and the relationship of the equipment factor and internal process performance. Customer service characteristic of container terminal shows significant moderating effect on both the relationship of the equipment factor and financial performance and the relationship of the operational efficiency factor and learning & growth performance.
