Factors that influence women's decision on pregnancy-childbirth

This study researched at investigating factors that influence on women's decision of pregnancy-childbirth. Data collection period were from Jun. 20 through Sept. 30, 2007. The research was Focus Group Discussion, and analyzed by qualitative research methods. Participants constructed into four groups; unmarried women in their twenties/thirties, married but childless women in their twenties/thirties, women with first baby in twenties, and women with first baby in thirties. The results showed that meaning of motherhood were responsibility, self-sacrifice, maturity, ambivalence and establishment a family. This study found that there are three major factors influencing women's decision of pregnancy-childbirth; personal, familial, and social factors. Personal factors included age, psychological preparation, enjoyment of personal life, self-realization, and physical-psychological health. Familial factors were burden of parenting-educating, financial preparation, and agreement with husband. The social factors were lack of social support on child-rearing, managing both work and childcare, and the changing societal attitude toward marriage. The conclusion revealed that women want pregnancy-childbirth at appropriate age, but the decisions are influenced by personal, familial, and social factors. Therefore, this study can serve as a instrument to develop educational programs and nursing interventions which assist women to make a better decision on pregnancy-childbirth.
