The Impact of Earning Management and Complexity of Accounting Entity on the Timeliness of Financial Information

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between timeliness of financial Information and complexity of accounting entity. More specifically, it attempts to empirically analyze what effect audit report lag (proxies of timeliness of financial information) imposed by complexity of accounting entity This study selected 4,979 firm-year from the manufacturing firms listed on the Korea Securities Exchange as of December 31 each year from 2003 to 2007. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, there are no significant association between discretionary accruals and audit report lag. The fact shows that auditor's audit risk is higher under long audit report lag. Thus, earnings management in companies with long audit report lag is further controlled than short audit report lag by auditors. Second it was found that EM had a significant positive effect on audit report lag. This indicates that complexity of accounting entity is affected on audit report lag Third, it was found that BTDIFF had a significant negative effect on audit report lag. Auditors set high effort in consideration of the audit risk under problem of the accounting information.
