수형자의 교도소 내 규율위반 : 교도소화의 적용과 자기통제이론에 근거한 재해석

The purpose of this paper is to examine inmates' prison rule-violations from the theoretical competition between prisonization and self-control theory. According to Sykes(1958), inmates' reaction to the pain of prison can be double-edged. One is exampled prisonization theory and the other can be reinterpreted from the perspective of self-control theory. Prisonization theory argues that inmates bind themselves to their fellow prisoners with ties of mutual aid, loyalty, affection, and respect, firmly standing in opposition to the officials;thereby, it assumes inmates' rule-violations to be a "collectivistic" reaction. On the other hand, self-control theory argues that inmates with lower level of self-control are, in their pursuit of instant and easy gratification, more likely to afflict not only prison officials but also fellow inmates; thereby it assumes inmates' rule-violation to be an "individualistic" reaction. The overall research findings support claims of self-control theory, while claims of prisonization are not empirically supported. Theoretical implications are discussed about recent integrative efforts to enhance empirical validity of prisonization theory.
