초록
One of the robust findings in the fear of crime research is that gender plays a central role in determining fear. And, regardless of age or other SES statuses, most studies report that females are more fearful of crime than their male counterparts. However, not many research have delved deeper into this paradoxical relationship. In other words, most research have neglected how and which predictors of fear are similar and different between females and males throughout their life stages. Obviously, a variety of prior research approaches have contributed to more fully understanding the extent and the nature of fear of crime among different types of people and the different types of environmental settings. However, the results on fear of crime are not wholly consistent. One of the reason for this inconsistency is due to the assumption that there is a static relationship between gender or age and fear of crime. Based on the developmental & life-course perspective, this article investigates the paradoxical relationship between gender and age on the fear of crime in Korea. First, this article examines whether gender and age interact their effects on fear of crime. Second, by examining different age groups, this article investigates that whether there are similarities and differences of the determinants on the fear of crime among different age groups. This study provides a developmental & life-course analysis evaluating on the different determinants of the fear of crime. This study confirms that there are some similar but mostly different determinants on the fear of crime among different gender and age groups.
Abstract
One of the robust findings in the fear of crime research is that gender plays a central role in determining fear. However, the results on fear of crime are not wholly consistent. One of the reason for this inconsistency is due to the assumption that there is a static relationship between gender or age and fear of crime. This study provides a developmental & life-course analysis evaluating on the different determinants of the fear of crime. This study confirms that there are some similar but mostly different determinants on the fear of crime among different gender and age groups.
