For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Under the same term, sustainable design (also called environmental design, environmentally sustainable design, environmentally conscious design, etc.) is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of economic, social, and ecological sustainability. The limits of sustainable design are reducing. Whole earth impacts are beginning to be considered because growth in goods and services is consistently outpacing gains in efficiency. Design for sustainability should observe healthy ecosystems and environments provide vital goods and services to humans and other organisms. There are four major ways of design approach that reducing negative human impact and enhancing ecosystem by designing. Those approaches are Papanek's design ethic, Sanborn principle, Cradle to cradle principle, and Manzini's. The aspect of management and process of designs are overall process assessment, reducing environmental impact model development, and categorical product approach. Sustainable design interfaces with economics through the social and ecological consequences of economic activity. Moving towards sustainability of design is also a social challenge that entails, international and national law, validation index, macro-micro social network, local-individual lifestyles, and ethical consumerism.
