The normal map regularly shows the general information for physical space regarding the geographical features, borderlines, roads, etc. On the other hand, the thematic map adds and emphasizes specific theme on the physical space. It shows intellectual space information of the phenomena along with geometric information. If the concept of the designer and the map are in accord with the user, throughout the thematic map organized map data into meaningful information from the level of simple geographic information, the communication functions of the map could be improved. Thus this paper shows the concept and examples of thematic map combined physical space information with intellectual space information, in order to improve communication effectively. For the thematic map design research, the meaning and examples of map communication are presented, and 28 domestic maps are analyzed to meet the current situation and problem. In order to apply the thematic map to Yeoungwol, where promotes it as a museum city, the main museum story map and its individual map design are presented. The specific stories of the city were collected and the physical and intellectual space information were sorted and organized in hierarchy for visual mapping with graphic variables. The museum story map design as a thematic map applied information design principles in terms of its organization and visualization would empower the communication between the map and user.
