‘마음·몸·영혼’과 사회에 대한 뉴에이지적 접근

초록
본 연구는 뉴에이지의‘마음·몸·영혼’의 상호관계와 일체성, 그리고 그 사회적 의미를 고찰하기 위해 수행된 것이다. 뉴에이지는 빈곤,국가·인종 간의 전쟁과 갈등으로 얼룩진 20세기를 배경으로 풍성함과평화와 인류애의 새로운 시대가 오리라는 희망을 갖고 출발했다. 뉴에이지는 본래의 비전을 성취하지 못해서 그 공식적인 명칭 역시 사라졌지만 비술에 기반했다는 부정적 인식에도 불구하고 지금까지 그 생명을 지속시킴으로써 적어도 그것이 일시적인 트렌드가 아니었음을 확인시켰다. 뉴에이지가 하모닉 컨버전스까지 마음의 깨달음에 초점을 둔것이 컨버전스 이후 몸의 변화로 옮겨가면서 뉴에이지 담론에 변화가보이는 것은 사실이지만 마음을 깨우치거나 몸을 변화시키는 두 가지 작용 모두에 영(spirit)의 존재가 있는 것이다. 영은 인간의 마음과 몸,우주 자연과 인간을 하나로 묶는 끈으로, 뉴에이지 전일주의는 마음과몸이 아닌‘마음·몸·영혼’의 일체성에 관한 것이다. 뉴에이지의 사회화에 대한 인식은 부정과 긍정의 양극단으로 나타난다. 부정적인 시각은 뉴에이지의 신비주의가 인간이 삶을 긍정하고 노력함으로서 이룩한 건강한 생활과 문화에 장애가 될 수 있다는 것이고, 긍정적인 시각은뉴에이지가 서구에서 기독교가 상정한 인간의 한계에 대한 도전에서출발한 것이라는 인식으로 이는 기존 권위에 대한 부정이면서 개인의영적 능력에 대한 확신을 의미한다는 것이다. 문제는 기업가들이 상업적 이익 추구의 수단으로 만들어낸 뉴에이지 상품들이 얼마나 이를 구매해서 사용하는 개인들의 운명을 통제할 수 있는가, 이러한 수단들이얼마나 자아 통제의 환상을 실현시킬 수 있는가에 있다.
Abstract
This article aims at studying the mutual relations, holism and the social meaning of mind-body-spirit of New Age. New Age made first appearance under the background of a broken society of the 20th century characterized by poverty, war, racism, hoping a new era would come with abundance, peace and brotherly love. After New Age failed to achieve its original vision, the references to ‘New Age’disappeared in literature; nevertheless New Age progressed in various fashions, proving that it was something beyond the temporary trend. Though it is true New Age discourse slightly changed the focus from awakening of mind to importance of body since Harmonic Convergence in 1987, the spirit has always been at its core. The spirit interconnects mind and body of humankind, universe and nature as one, and accordingly New Age holism refers to the interrelation of mind-body-spirit, not mind-body. The recognition of socialization of New Age has been divided into extremely negative and positive views. The former is based upon the perspective that the mysticism of New Age could exert negative influence on healthy life and culture, while the latter shows the recognition that the New Age contributed to the disapproval of the existing authority and the confidence in individual’s spiritual ability, in that it started from the challenge against human limitation which Christianity had set. The problem lies in how the New Age products for‘ subtle body’, a model of embodied subjectivity,can dominate the destiny of individuals and realize human illumination of selfcontrol practicing with them.
