산업화 세대의 일 중심적 삶 : 남성노동자의 구술생애사 연구

남성노동자의 생애서사에 나타나는 중요한 특징의 하나는 일 중심성이다. 여성노동자의 생애서사가 일과 가족, 개인의 삶이라는 세 가지 영역을 넘나들며 구성된다면, 남성의 생애이야기에서는 일 이외의 다른 영역에 대한 관심이 거의 드러나지 않는다. 이 연구는 한국사회에서 이러한 일 중심성이 1960년대 이후의 산업화 과정에서 형성되었다고 보고 산업화 세대 남성노동자들의 구술생애사를 통해 그 특징을 분석하였다. 2008년 한국노동연구원의 중고령근로자패널에서 선정된 25명(남녀포함) 중 일 중심적 생애구술을 제시한 10명의 남성노동자들의 이야기를 분석의 대상으로 삼았다. 이들의 일 중심적 생애사에서 나타나는 특징은 의무로서의 노동 개념, 강한 생계부양자의식, 장시간 노동체제의 수용과 지지, 위험 감수, 노동 몰입과 노동 중독, 가족 기억의 부재(不在), 억압된 성찰성이였다. 이러한 특징은 국가 주도의 강력한 발전 전략하에서 개인들의 사생활을 희생한 채 장시간 노동을 이어갔던 노동집약적 산업화시대의 산물이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
A distinct feature in an oral history of male worker's is work-centrality. While woman worker's oral history is a kind of cross-over story, man's life history includes few of the story of family, everyday life and an individual. This article analyzed the work-centrality in 10 male workers' narratives who has worked and lived during the industrialization period in Korea. The characteristics of male workers' work-centered lives were the conception of the work as a duty, a strong male breadwinner ideology, the voluntary acception and support for long time work, readiness to dirty and dangerous work,workaholism, absence of memory about family life and reflexive thinking. These were the products of the labor intensive industrialization in which the state with a strong leadership for export-drive development policy had forced to long time work at the expense of family and individual life.
