Objectives: This case study investigated the factors influencing the marital conflicts of, and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for, three couples experiencing a divorce crisis. Methods: The study used constant comparative analysis, open coding, and Miles &Huberman's matrix and network display to analyze the data. Results: Marital conflicts were found to include disagreements with, and negative attitudes towards, the spouse, as well as sex-life problems. The results of the study indicated that participants’ lack of differentiation of self and dysfunctional communication patterns within their families of origin influenced the marital conflict. Family therapy techniques used with couples in crisis included setting up a therapeutic aim, probing family of origin, using process questions, showing active empathy, using self-disclosure, finding punctuation, relabeling(vindication of the other's position), attempting detriangulation, and coaching. Conclusions: As a result of the therapist's interventions, the marital conflicts of the three couples in the study were alleviated. Change was evident by virtue of the participants’ improved attitude toward their spouse, better satisfaction with their sex lives, and changes in their communication.
