This study estimates the efficiency of mutual saving banks (MSBs) using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. The sample period is from 2006, the prior year to the global financial crisis, to 2011, the most recent year for which data are available. The purpose of this study has two folds. First, we estimate and analyse the efficiency of MSBs by regions. Second, we try to find out how the global financial crisis in 2007 and the incident of massive suspension of MSBs in 2011 have affected the efficiency of MSBs. We find that average efficiency of MSBs in Capital area and big cities is relatively higher than that in other areas. We also find that both the global financial crisis and the incident of suspension of MSBs have a negative effect on the efficiency of MSBs. The former has a much more negative effect on the efficiency of MSBs than the latter.
