사회운동 노조주의 연구의 쟁점과 과제

In recent years, Social Movement Unionism(SMU) has captured the interest of labor researchers. SMU—taken to mean trade union movement solidarity with other social movements and local communities, trade union intervention into issues outside the workplace, and active participation of members—has been presented as an alternative for the future of trade unions. However, SMU has not been so useful as an academic concept because the term SMU has become so diversified. The fact that there is difficulty in conceptual usage of the term, however, does not deny the significance of the SMU studies. There are two points we should pay attention to in the SMU studies: one is the way the studies understand trade unionism. We can find common ground among the diverse SMU studies in that they have altered the analysis of unionism by placing it in the field of civil society. But I argue that it is more appropriate to introduce civil society as a factor. That is, in order to explain the changes in contemporary unionism, it is necessary to focus on how a constellation of factors such as class, market, and civil society interact to affect trade unionism rather than introduce a new field of analysis. Second, the SMU studies show that conventional unionism has reached its limit and suggest global unionism as a realistic challenge. However, I argue that global unionism should be regarded not as a n ew alternative, b ut r ather, a s a new practical s pace o perating i n relation with conventional unionism.
