Effective Measures against Piracy in International Law

In modern times, piracy has become one of the most injurious and insidious of crimes-significant pirate operations threaten to devastate the economic, political, and maritime stability of the countries concerned and the broader world community. Thus, a variety of measures to combat piracy have been taken, via regional and worldwide measures. Nevertheless, piracy activities are still continuing and have even increased since the 20th century, and its strategy and types are continually changing using fatal and heavy weapons. Therefore, more effective measures to practically, actually, and concretely combat piracy in the ocean are clearly necessary. Taking this into consideration, this article will touch upon several current issues relevant to piracy, including the concept or definition of piracy, trends in piracy, the application and implementation of counter-piracy activities, and joint cooperative measures for ameliorating or preventing pirate activity via international law. Finally this article suggests desirable ways to take measures against piracy in international law in consideration of diverse international circumstances and trends.
