방글라데시 출신 이주 노동자 샤골 씨가 지내온 16 년 동안의 한국에서의 삶은 한국 사회에 잘 적응한 한 이주 노동자의 모습을 보여준다. 샤골씨가 구술한 자신의 생애사를 통해서 볼 때, 샤골씨는 방글라데시 출신으로서 한국어를 습득하는데 좋은 소질을 가졌고, 가족적 문화에 익숙했으며, 개인적으로 이슬람의 의례와 형식 문화에 대해 비판적 시각을 가진 것 등이 그 요인으로 작용하였다. 또한 그가 방글라데시에서 다닌 대학에서 전공한 기술과 동일한 종류의 일을 한국의 공장에서 함으로써 기술을 잘 습득하고 그 결과 회사 내에서 주요 노동력으로 인정받아 유리한 사회적 위치를 차지할 수 있었던 요인도 중요하다. 그리고 1990년대 방글라데시 인민 혁명에 참여함으로써 그 청년 세대가 갖는 인권과 평등에 대한 의식을 가졌고 그 덕분에 한국에서의 이주민 활동가들을 만나 자신의 꿈을 실현하기 위해 매진할 수 있었다. 이러한 여러 요소 덕분에 방글라데시인 샤골씨는 다른 이주 노동자들에 비해 한국 사회에 잘 적응할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Sixteen years of Mr. Shagor, a migrant worker from Bangladesh, in Korea has shown us some case of well adapted life without some serious cultural clash against Korean host society. However, it does not mean his case is to be universal one of migrant workers in Korean society. The life history of Mr. Shagor in Korea shows us some basic causes of his successful settlement and cultural adaptation. Mr. Shagor, a Bangladeshi has a good talent of commanding foreign language as the other South Asians. Moreover, he has been well adapted on the basis of common social structure that is family-oriented and patriarchal society. In addition, for he has been critical against religion or religious ritualism of Islam, he could adapt himself in Korea which is very strange with Islam culture. Personally, he has graduated his college majoring auto-mobile techniques in Bangladesh and this helps him to settle down his successful first days in industrial factory in Korea. As a well trained worker on auto-mobile technique, Mr Shagor could maintain a good social status as a worker in his factory to keep good social relationship in the factory. Finally, since he was a college student with sincerely participating the peoples power movement of 1990s in Bangladesh to have been conscious in the sense of social equality, democracy, human rights etc., he has been close with NGO workers on migrant workers issues in Korea and it leads him to conceive Korea as a land of his dream for democratic society.
