Today, user customization or DIY culture is understood in the framework of the expansion of a design concept and these phenomenon indicate everyday design activity and active user participation. In this paper, an examination of 40 user-produced design cases following current design examination regulations under domestic design protection acts is conducted for the analysis of the relation between their design features and legal design registration. The results indicate the following; user-produced design(UPD) has particular form, function and use created by the nature of everyday design activities, but there are many factors of irregularity under design protection acts to legally protect only product’s appearance. Also, it could be said that UPD is a reasonable design for being used in the everyday context, but fulfilling substantial requirements for legal and administrative procedures by patent counsel is necessary for increasing the possibility of design registration. In conclusion, UPD can be defined a prototype design that has ingenious design concept and atypical form reflecting everyday experiences and suitable usability. For that reason, an ideas-strategic approach of intellectual property, utilization of an intellectual property supporting program, and a co-design process involving various industry sectors could be suggested for utilizing UPD’s useful value prior to legal design registration and practical use.
