외부 네트워크가 벤처기업의 생존에 미치는 영향 : 내부역량의 조절 효과를 중심으로

국가 경제의 중추 역할을 해야 하는 벤처기업은 소규모 신생 기업의 불리함을 극복하고 생존 가능성을 높이고자 외부 네트워크를 형성한다. 지금까지 외부 네트워크가 벤처기업 생존에 미치는 영향을 검증하는 연구는 많았지만, 그 결과가 일관되지 못했다. 본 연구에서는 또 다른 변수, 즉 내부역량이라는 상황변수를 고려해 외부 협력의 효과를 재검토했다. 외부 네트워크의 직접효과에 대한 실증 분석에서는 산학연 협력이 벤처기업의 생존에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 반면, 정책자금 수혜는 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 내부역량의 조절 효과를 검증한 결과, 벤처기업의 기술역량은 산학연협력이 생존에 미치는 정(+)의 영향을 강화하고, 자본규모는 정책자금 수혜와 생존 간에 관계를 긍정적으로 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 기술역량이 높을수록 산학연 협력이 생존에 미치는 긍정적 영향은 커지고, 벤처기업의 자본금 규모가 클수록 정부의 자금지원이 생존에 미치는 악영향이 감소한다는 것이다. 본 연구의 가장 큰 의의는 생존의 주요 영향 요인인 외부 네트워크의 일관되지 않은 효과가 내부역량으로 조절됨을 실증한 것이다. 이러한 연구결과는 벤처기업의 생존을 높이기 위해서는 산학연 협력과 정부의 지원이 일정 수준 이상의 내부 역량을 확보한 벤처기업에 집중되는 것이 효과적임을 의미한다.
Abstract
Startup ventures, which play a pivotal role for the national economy, form external networks to overcome the disadvantages of being new small enterprises as well as to improve the chances of survival. There have been many studies on the impact of external networks on the survival of startup companies, but the findings are not consistent. This study reexamines the effect of external networks by taking into account another contingency variable, companies’ internal capabilities. The empirical analysis on the direct effect between a startup’s external network and its survival has revealed that the industry-academy collaborations have a positive impact on survival while the policy fund support has a negative impact. Additionally, when the moderating effect of the internal capabilities was probed, it turns out that technological capability enhances the positive effect industry-academy collaborations has on the company survival and, furthermore, that the size of capital positively moderates the relationship between the government support fund and company survival. In other words, the better the technological capability, the bigger the positive impact of industry-academy collaborations on company survival and the larger a startup's capital, the smaller the negative impact of the government support fund has on survival. The most significant implication of this study is that the inconsistent effect of external networks, which is a major factor in survival, is empirically proved to be moderated by internal capabilities. The aforementioned study results indicate that, in order to improve the survival rate of the startup ventures, the industry-academy collaboration and the government finances shall concentrate on the startups with a certain level of internal capabilities.
