최근 우리 교육현장에서의 최대 이슈인 학교폭력 문제의 근본적인 해결을 위해서는 단편적 처방보다 교육목적에서부터 교육방법 전반에 대한 총체적인 분석과 대책을 요구한다. 이에 본 논문은 학교의 본래적 기능과 역할을 회복하기 위한 출발점으로 교육의 목적이 어떻게 설정되어야 하는지에 관하여 논의의 단초를 제공해 보고자 한다. 일반적으로 교육의 목적은 개인의 차원에서 ‘행복’을, 사회적 차원에서 ‘정의’라는 것에 동의한다. 그리고 이러한 두 차원의 목적은 ‘잘삶’ 혹은 ‘좋은 삶’으로 귀결된다. ‘잘삶’과 ‘미덕의 추구’를 ‘정의’의 주요한 덕목으로 이끌어 가면서 그 주장의 근거로 타인에 대한 배려와 공동체 의식에서 찾으려고 하는 샌델(M. Sandel)은 ‘정의란 무엇인가?’(2009)라는 책을 통하여 정의를 바라보는 세 가지 시각, 즉 공리주의적 관점, 자유주의적 관점, 공동체적 관점을 면밀하게 분석하고, 미덕과 좋은 삶의 추구를 가장 바람직한 정의의 관점으로 지지한다. 그리고 그 방법으로 도덕교육을 제안한다. 교육이란 학생들의 자율적인 잘삶을 증진시키는 것을 목적으로 하여야 한다는 화이트의 주장에서와 같이 이제 학교는 학생들의 경쟁과 대립의 조장에서 벗어나 타인에 대한 배려와 존중을 강조하여야 한다. 이와 같은 공동체적 잘삶의 태도를 함양함으로써 개인의 ‘행복 추구’는 물론, 학교폭력의 문제를 완화할 수 있다. 이러한 측면에서 샌델이 주장한 정의의 주요한 영역인 미덕의 추구와 좋은 삶의 추구는 교육목적론으로서의 충분한 타당성을 지닌다.
Abstract
Recently school violence, which is the biggest issue, requires a holistic analysis and measures about overall areas from the aims of education to its methods. This paper is to provide several foundations for further discussion of the goal of education. Like White, Michael Sandel claims that well-being or good life unfolds on consideration for others and community spirit in his recently writing - Justice: What's the right thing to do?(2009)Sandel discussing three perspectives on justice, utilitarianism of the greatest happiness of the greatest number, a perspective of freedom of choice from a position of free will and equality, and a value of common good to be pursued by community, Sandel concludes like While that a pursuit of virtue and good life is the best perspective on justice. White asserts that the aims of education is to improve students' autonomous good living and seeks moral and altruistic education for its solution. Given that White's good life includes others' good life as well as one's own good life, and Sandel's justice is focused on consideration and respect for others, a pursuit of virtue and good life that are claimed by Sandel as major areas of justice are considered valid as the aims of education.
