M. 메를로-퐁티 철학의 시각적 유형화 -미니멀리즘을 중심으로-

본 논문에서는 메를로-퐁티의 철학이 미니멀리즘에 끼친 영향을 살펴봄으로써 그의 철학이 가져온 작품과 관람자의 관계에 대한 새로운 이해가 동시대 미술에 갖는 의미를 밝히고자 한다. 미니멀리즘의 단순한 형태의 작업과 그 반복적 배열은 작품의 내부적 구성을 최대한 없앰으로써 관람자로 하여금 특정 공간에서 그리고 시간의 흐름 속에서 작품을 지각하도록 유도한다. 이러한 현상학적 경험을 가져오는 작품의 특성을 프리드는 연극성이라 불렀는데, 미니멀리즘의 많은 작가들은 현상학자 메를로-퐁티의『지각의 현상학』을 접하면서 작품과 작품이 놓인 공간, 그리고 그 공간 속에 있는 관람자라는 세 요소의 관계성에 주목한다. 지각을 앎의 근원으로 삼았던 메를로-퐁티는 기존의 데카르트적 정신·신체의 이분법적 구도를 거부하고 신체에 근거한 지각경험의 중요성을 주장하였다. 그는 존재론으로 넘어가는 후기에 가서는 대상과 주체는 완전하게 구분되는 것이 아니며 세계 내에서 서로 얽혀있고 속해있음을 역설한다. 먼저, 본고에서는 메를로-퐁티가 기존의 전통 인식론이 갖고 있는 어떤 점을 비판하고 그것을 토대로 어떤 새로운 주장을 펼치는지를 살펴본다. 그리고 그것이 1960년대 미니멀리즘에 끼친 영향이 무엇인지를 로버트 모리스, 리차드 세라 두 작가의 작품을 메를로-퐁티의 철학적 관점에서 분석한 텍스트들을 통해 알아보고자 한다. 이러한 시도는 미니멀리즘으로 인한 작품과 관람자와의 새로운 관계 전환이 동시대 미술에까지 영향을 미치고 있음을 진단하고, 앞으로의 미술형태를 예측하는 하나의 기반이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the relevance of Merleau-Ponty's theory to Minimalism and to discuss the meaning of the new understanding about the interrelationship between an artwork and a viewer which his theory brought. Minimalism which has the simplest structure and repetitive arrangement and minimizes the inner compositions leads audiences to perceive in a specific space with real time. Many of Minimalist have focused on the relationship among an artwork, the space and a viewer due to Merleau-Ponty's『Phenomenology of Perception』. Against Descartes, Merleau-Ponty argued that we perceive an object based on our body and subject and object are not totally separated and they are intricately intertwined and mutually engaged. First, this study explores what he criticizes in traditional thought and what he argues based on it. And this study proceeds with how his argument has influenced Minimalists in 1960s focusing on the texts which analyze the works of Robert Morris and Richard Serra applying Merleau-Ponty's theory. This attempt is to analyze the relationship between an artwork and a viewer in a current circumstance and provide a ground in predicting a new form of art.
