Computer Programming Education for Multimedia Design

The integration of a computer into a design field began with the utilization of a simple graphic program and develops up to the induction of computer science methodology creating new department, the department of multimedia design. A multimedia design plays an important role with the progress of multimedia technology. The multimedia programs, which are in use in the fields such as web, animation, game, e-book, were in a simple stage in the sense of function in the first place. The programs become powerful enough to be used and to produce high quality contents in many fields. A great deal of credit goes to the programming languages embedded in the programs. A designer with a programming ability is essential to producing good contents. Many students encounter difficulties in learning programming because programming requires a strict logical thinking process. Most of students of multimedia design belong to right-bran cognition group which is contrast to the left-brain cognition group who is comfortable with logical thinking. This makes multimedia design students put into the more harsh learning condition. To help them to learn programming, the cognitive apprenticeship teaching method, which are a dominant teaching method in the design field and is compatible with right-brain cognition group, is inducted. The students of multimedia design department and other department take MBTI test and two programming tests. The crosstabulation using χ2 and t-test with the test data confirm that the induction and utilization of the cognitive apprenticeship teaching method is valid and effective for teaching programming for the students of the department of multimedia design
