모바일 주식 거래의 행태와 수익성 분석

2009년 11월 아이폰 출시 이후 다양한 정보탐색 기능과 장소를 가리지 않는 접근성 때문에 스마트폰은 폭발적으로 성장하였다. 일반휴대폰과 다른 점은 목적에 맞는 전용 앱을 설치할 수 있다는 점이다. 주식거래를 위한 전용 앱을 MTS(Mobile Trading System, 이하 모바일)라고 한다. 모바일의 확산은 자본시장 전반에 영향을 주었다. 증권사 영업환경과 IT 개발 대상이 변경되었고, 유비쿼터스적 특성을 가진 투자자층이 확산되었다. 금융당국은 미공개정보 이용에 대한 개연성으로 모바일의 성장을 주시하고 있다. 모바일에 대한 관심에 비해 관련 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 본 연구는 2011년 1월부터 1년 6개월간의 자료를 이용하여 모바일 주식거래의 행태와 수익성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 모바일 이용자는 132만개 계좌(25%)며, 35만개 계좌(6.5%)는 모바일만을 이용하고 있다. 둘째, HTS 이용자가 모멘템투자전략의 특성을 보이는 반면, 모바일 이용자는 역행투자전략의 특성을 보인다. 넷째, 과거에 PDA, ARS, 영업점 이용자의 모바일 전환은 통계적으로 유의한 수익률 개선효과가 있었다. 본 연구는 가입자 수 3,000만 명을 넘어선 스마트폰 시장의 성장이 우리나라 자본시장에 미치는 영향에 대해 증권시장의 참여자들에게 유용한 정보를 제공하고 있다. 또한, 감독당국에게 새로운 패러다임의 변화에 대한 대응방안을 마련할 필요성이 있음을 보여준다.
Abstract
Since the launch of ‘iphone’ on Nov 2009, smartphones widely come into use thanks to information-searching capabilities combined with advanced internet connectivities. What distinguishes smartphones the most from feature phones is that one can use ‘apps’ designed for specific purpose. In particular, the apps suited for trading stocks are called MTS. Quick and deep penetration of smartphones is altering capital markets in various aspects. Operational environment of securities firms is changing and new IT-infrastructure is required. Growing number of investors are becoming ubiquitous traders. Financial Authorities are also on the lookout for the rapid growth of mobile trading. Despite increased social interests, however, we barely find researches on mobile trading yet. In this paper, we examine mobile investor behavior and its profitability using unique data. This study provides new insights to the market participants about widespread adoption of smartphones and its impact on the capital market. Our study might also be useful for the Financial Authorities that might prepare new regulation in the face of mobile era.
