단정수립 후 전향장치와 전향자들의 내러티브-‘양심서’를 중심으로

이 글은 내면은 알 수 없다는 자명한 명제를 토대로, 단정수립 후 조직된 보도연맹에서 고안한 전향 장치인 ‘양심서’를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 전향은 외면과 내면이 가진 댓쌍의 문법과도 같은 관계 속에서 밖으로 드러난 외적인 것들을 통해 파악하거나 추측할 수밖에 없는 일개인의 내면을 전면화시키는 과정을 통해서만이 증명될 수 있다. 그런데 역설적으로 이때 전향자의 내면은 영원히 알 수 없는 미지의 값이 된다. 따라서 보도연맹에서는 인준된 전향 보증장치인 양심서를 필요로 하였다. 양심서는 전향자들의 전향동기와 내적 논리 등의 기술을 통해 심경의 측면을, 반드시 외적으로 발화하고 선언할 수밖에 없었던 형식을 통해 제도적 측면을 구속하는 이중의 잠금장치로 구성되어 있었다. 단정수립 후 국민들은 반드시 양심서란 고백 장치를 통해 국민의 자격 유무를 심사 받아야만 했다. 그러나 일반인들에게 양심서가 국민국가의 일원으로 승인받는 절차였다면, 문인들에게 양심서란 그들의 존재방식과 직결되었다. 그도 그럴 것이 문화인의 전향은 이승만 정부가 부여한 명징한 테제 아래 복무하는 노선으로의 진입을 뜻했기 때문이다. 그래서 예술제전이란 미명하 거듭된 행사에 동원되어야 했고, 이때 문인들의 행사 참여는 양심서의 변주곡과 다름이 없었다. 나아가 이 파장은 비전향 문인들에게까지 미쳐, 그들 역시 자기 검증과 자신의 무결함을 입증할 수 있는 양심서에 준하는 글들을 발표하였다. 즉 국민의 창출을 위해 역으로 국민을 감시 통제한 이승만 정부의 반공 이데올로기 체제 하에서 그 누구에게도 결코 안전장치란 존재하지 않았다. 이를 전향의 제도와 심경이 이분법이 아닌 양심서란 누빔점을 통해 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
Abstract
Based in the obvious fact that the inner mind is unknowable, this paper examines the Statement of Conscience, an apparatus for (political) conversion devised by the Intelligence League. An individual is much like a double grammar split between exterior and interior halves, in which proof is obtainable only through identifying or estimating the exterior. Proof lies solely in effecting a tantalization of the interior. Yet paradoxically the interior of the individual will always remain an unknown domain, Therefore the Intelligence League required a Statement of Conscience is a device for assuring the (sincerity of) the conversion. The Statement of Conscience is a dual open-and-lock device for isolating systemic aspects in a form which, previously, always necessitated external enunciations or articulations of the inner mind through techniques for ascertaining the defector’s motives for conversion or their mind’s internal logic. After renunciation, a confessional device was needed to test people’s qualifications. But if the layman consented to the Statement of Conscience as a part of the nation-state, for writers, the Statement was directly linked to their mode of existence. The defection of artists meant encroachment qua route serving the clear mandate of the Syngh-man Rhee regime. Mobilization was required to repeated events under the name of “art”, with participation by artists serving as a variation on the theme of the Statement of Conscience. This trend, moreover, spread to those non-converts, who published writings nearly approaching Statements of Conscience to verify themselves and to prove their integrity. That is, under the anti-Communist system of the Synghman Rhee government, which kept the people under surveillance for the purpose of creating “citizens”, no safety devices existed. This must be examined through the “insulator” called the Statement of Conscience rather than through the binarism of conversion structure vs. inner mind.
