본 논문의 목적은 해외직접투자 후속투자 결정요인을 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통하여 분석하는 것이며, 크게 후속투자 결정요인을 기업내부요인(기업역량 활용요인과 기업역량 개발요인으로 구분) 및 기업 환경요인(시장요인과 비용요인으로 구분)으로 구분하여 접근하였다. KOTRA 2008/2009 해외직접투자 디렉토리에 제시된 베트남 진출 한국 제조업을 대상으로 설문조사한 결과를 기초로 베트남에 진출한 한국 해외직접투자 기업의 후속투자 결정요인을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 상품인지도 개발요인으로서 기업역량 개발요인이 후속투자 결정에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 베트남의 경우에는 시장요인보다 정부 우대 정책인 비용요인이 후속투자 결정에 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 기업들이 보유하고 있는 기업특유우위를 활용하기 위하여 투자하는 것뿐만 아니라 그 기업이 보유하고 있는 역량을 개발하고 또 새로운 경쟁우위를 발굴하거나 창출하기 위한 목적으로 투자를 하며, 특히 후속투자의 경우에는 후자의 목적이 더 강하게 작용하는 것으로 해석할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper examined the determinants of the sequential investment decision of Korean firms in Vietnam. The sample included Korean manufacturing firms selected from Kotra 2008/2009 FDI directory and data was collected from surveys with Korean firms which have been investing in Vietnam. Based on Logistic analysis, two main determinants are hypothesized to have an impact on the decision of sequential investment. They are firm’s capabilities (capability exploration and capability exploitation) and firm’s external factors (market factors and cost factor). Moreover, the empirical analysis results suggested that firms reinvesting in a foreign market tend to upgrade its capabilities than to exploit them. In this study, it means that the purpose of a Korean firm’s sequential investment decision in Vietnam is in order to upgrade their brand recognition level. Therefore, when deciding to reinvest in a specific country, emerging market like Vietnam, the cost factors such as host country’s investment policy give more influence on the decision than the market factors. According to this result, the firm, by making sequential FDI in a market, will not only tend to utilize but also upgrade firm’s capabilities in order to develop them or to explore new competence.
