자본주의가 하나님 나라의 관점에서 합당한 경제체제인가에 대하여는 논란이 있어 왔다. 그러나 현실적으로 대부분의 크리스천이 자본주의 경제체제에 속하여 삶을 영위하고 있기 때문에 크리스천에게 자본주의 경제체제의 핵심 경제행위인 주식투자가 적합한지를 판단하는 것은 매우 중요한 주제이다. 기존의 연구에서는 크리스천의 주식투자 적합성과 관련하여 찬반의 다양한 주장이 제기되고 있다. 크리스천의 주식투자 허용 여부 판단의 어려움은 기독교 역사에서 주식과 유사한 금융상품인 이자수취 허용에 대한 인식이 시대에 따라 변화한 것을 볼 때 쉽게 유추된다. 주식과 달리 이자는 성경본문에 직접 언급되고 있음에도 불구하고 초대 교부시대부터 중세까지는 이자수취가 금지되었고 종교개혁 후에는 이자수취가 허용되는 것이 일반화 되었으나 아직도 이자수취를 금지 하여야 한다는 주장이 일부 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 기존 연구에서 단편적으로 언급되었던 이자의 생산성에 대한 심도 있는 분석과 주식투자를 반대하는 주요 이유인 불로소득, 위험, 투기, 탐심에 관한 구체적인 논의를 통하여 주식투자에 대한 보다 명확한 성경적 관점을 제시하고자 하였다. 결론적으로 이자의 생산적인 면과 주식투자가 크리스천의 삶에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 검토한 결과 크리스천에게 이자수취와 주식투자는 신용거래를 제한하는 등 일정한 전제 조건하에 허용하는 것이 옳다고 본다.
Abstract
It may be argued whether capitalism is a proper economic system from the viewpoint of the Kingdom of God. In reality, however, a majority of Christians are living in capitalist societies. Therefore, it still remains important to determine the propriety of investing in stocks, a key economic behavior in capitalism. Previous studies presented varied perspectives regarding the propriety of Christian stock investments. By examining the changes in the Church's historical stance on interest, a financial instrument similar to stock, it can be understood easily why investing in stocks as Christians is a complicated issue. Unlike stock investments, interest is frequently mentioned in the Bible, yet its interpretation still remains difficult. Interest had been banned by the church from the Patristic period to the Middle Ages until it was generally allowed after the Reformation. Despite current acceptance in general, some skepticism towards collecting interest remains. Based on a rigorous analysis of the productivity of interest mentioned in previous studies and an in-depth analysis of the key reasons for opposing stock investments such as unearned income, risk, speculation, and greed, this paper attempts to offer a clearer biblical perspective on stock investments. Followed by a review of the productivity of interest and the overall impact of stock investments on the Christian life, the study concludes that interest and stock investments should be allowed for Christians provided that they follow a set of preconditions such as limiting margin trading.
