망각을 망각한 시대에 살고 있는 우리에게는 새로운 프라이버시가 필요하다. 왜냐하면 완벽한 기억력의 시대는 우리에게 새로운 내일을 살아갈 자유를 송두리째 앗아가 버리기 때문이다. 한때 잊혀진다는 것이 가혹한 형벌로 받아들여 질 때가 있었다. 잊혀진다는 것은 그 존재의 부정을 의미하기 때문이다. 그렇지만 생물학적 죽음은 망각을 동반하기 마련이다. 더 이상 이 세상에 존재하지 않는 것을 지속적으로 기억해 내기란 결코 쉽지 않은 일이기 때문에, 죽음과 망각은 운명처럼 받아들여졌다. 그런데 오늘날 이 시대를 살아가는 개인들은 새로운 형벌을 안고 살아간다. 언제어디서든 완벽하게 기억해 내는 디지털화된 정보는 우리로 하여금 지속되는 현재적 과거의 족쇄에서 벗어날 수 없게 만든다. 완벽한 기억의 창살에 갇혀 살아가야만 하는 현대인들은 간절히 잊혀지기를 소망한다. 죽기를 희망한다. 그러나 결코 그럴 수 없다. 한번 새겨진 디지털 주홍글씨는 사라지는 법이 없기 때문이다. 우리의 정보는 우리의 인생보다 더 오래토록, 끈질기게 살아남는다. 우리가 이 세상에 존재하지 않는 그 시점에도 여전히 남아 그 누군가에게 기억될 것이다. 강력한 검색엔진에 걸러지지 않는 정보란 없다. 전지구적 네크워크를 통해 흘러가지 않는 정보란 없다. 이것이 바로 새로운 의미와 내용을 담고 있는 프라이버시의 출현을 요청하게 되는 사회적․시대적 맥락이다. 망각이 중지된, 개인정보의 죽음이 중지된 인터넷 공간에서 우리는 절실하게 ‘잊혀질 권리’를 요구한다.
Abstract
New privacy is needed for us who are living in this age that has forgotten oblivion. It's because digitized information that can be fully remembered at anytime and at anywhere is not able to free us from long lasting the current shackles of the past. Living trapped in the perfect lattice of the memory, Moderns eagerly hope to be forgotten. But they never can. Because digital scarlet letter once engraved never perishes. Our personal information survive more tenaciously and longer than our lives in the Internet space. It will be still remembered to someone even at the time we do not exist. There is no information that can not be found in the powerful search engine. There is no information that does not flow through a global network. This is a social and contemporary context, which asks for the emergence of privacy containing new meanings and contents. In the internet space Oblivion, the death of privacy has stopped, we want the right to be forgotten desperately.
