해외다국적기업 국내자회사의 연구개발(R&D)활동 수준 결정 요인에 관한 연구

본 연구는 한국 내 해외다국적기업 자회사의 R&D 활동 수준을 결정하는 요인을 규명하기 위해 실증적 분석을 실시하였다. 해외다국적기업 국내 자회사의 R&D 활동 수준에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 먼저 현지시장 환경요인을 시장 특성과 기술 특성으로 분류하였다. 또한 다국적기업관련 요인으로는 해외자회사 특성, 모기업 특성, 그리고 모기업과 자회사 간 자원 및 지식공유 특성을 설정하였으며 추가적으로 정부지원 수준을 통제변수로 설정하였다. 이의 실증 분석을 위해 한신평신용정보(주)의 KIS Value 자료를 바탕으로 2010년도 결산기업 중 외국인 투자지분의 비중이 50% 이상인 1,016개의 기업을 모집단으로 하는 144개 기업을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 분석 결과 시장 환경요인인 기술 특성과 기업관련 요인인 자회사 특성과 지식공유 특성이 자회사의 R&D 활동 수준 결정에 유의한 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 국내 산업의 기술력 향상과 연구 시설에 대한 인프라 확충이 해외다국적기업 국내자회사 R&D 활동 수준을 증가시키고 보다 높은 수준의 자회사를 유인하는 작용을 하고 있음을 의미한다. 또한 기업 간 활성화된 자원공유의 특성도 R&D 활동 수준을 증가시키는 요인으로 작용하는 것으로 분석되었다.
Abstract
This study is an empirical analysis on the level of R&D activities of MNCs' foreignsubsidiaries in international business. We analyze the effects of the industrial and technologicalenvironments of the local market and the capability of the subsidiary, MNC HQ, andresource(knowledge) exchange among MNCs at the level of subsidiaries' R&D activity. The results show that the technological environment of the local market, capability of thesubsidiary itself and the resource(knowledge) exchange ability among MNCs has significanteffects on the level of subsidiaries' R&D activities. This is important in discovering theempirical factors of determining the level of subsidiary R&D activity through analyzing foreignsubsidiaries in Korea. As mentioned above, the implications of this research were summarized as follows. TheKorean government, in trying to attract foreign investment & foreign MNCs' subsidiaries, willbe essential in supporting and improving the technology of research & laboratories. This needsto be increased to entice foreign MNCs' subsidiaries as well as foreign investment. Improvingthe technology in research & laboratories will create a spillover effect in terms of positivefeedback. The resulting determinants of local R&D activity level of foreign MNCs' subsidiaryprovides a rich set of possibilities for further theoretical and empirical development in terms offoreign MNCs' subsidiary research.
