본사의 지원수준과 통제수준이 해외 자회사의 탐색적 역량과 활용적 역량에 미치는 영향: 한국기업의 해외 자회사를 대상으로
The Effects of HQs’ Support Level and Control Level on the Explorative and Exploitative Capabilities of Foreign Subsidiaries: Evidence from the Overseas Subsidiaries of Korean Firms

본 연구는 한국 기업들의 해외 자회사를 대상으로 본사의 지원수준과 통제수준이 해외 자회사의 탐색적 역량(explorative capability)과 활용적 역량(exploitative capability)에 미치는 영향을 실증 분석하였다. 전 세계 49개국에 진출한 201개의 한국 상장사들의 해외 자회사로부터 회수된 설문지 391개를 바탕으로 한 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 해외 자회사에 대한 본사의 지원수준은 해외 자회사의 탐색적 역량과 활용적 역량에 모두 정(+)의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 자회사에 대한 본사의 통제수준은 해외 자회사의 탐색적 역량에는 부(-)의 영향을 미친다는 증거가 발견되었으나, 자회사의 활용적 역량에 유의한 영향을 미친다는 증거는 발견하지 못했다. 이러한 분석결과는 선행연구의 결과들과 일관되게 해외 자회사에 대한 높은 수준의 본사지원은 해외 자회사의 경쟁력에 중요한 원천이 되며, 해외 자회사에 대한 높은 수준의 통제는 본사가 보유하고 있지 못한 새로운 역량을 구축하는데 도움이 되는 학습을 저해하는 요인이 될 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the effects of headquarters(HQs)’ support level and control level on the explorative and exploitative capability of Korean overseas subsidiaries. This empirical analysis, based on surveys collected from 391 Korean overseas subsidiaries located in 49 countries around the world, yielded the following conclusions. First, HQs’ support level has a positive impact on both the explorative and exploitative capabilities of foreign subsidiaries. Second, evidence indicated that the HQs’ control level over their subsidiaries has a negative impact on the explorative capability of the foreign subsidiaries, but there was no evidence to show that it had any significant impact on the subsidiaries’ exploitative capability. These analytical results were consistent with the results of other preceding studies, demonstrating that a high level of HQs’ support for their overseas subsidiaries is an important source of their competitiveness and that a high degree of control over overseas subsidiaries is a factor that impedes the learning process that facilitates the development of new capabilities that are absent in the HQs.
