This paper set out to investigate the missionary life of William M. Clark, a Presbyterian Church in the United States(PCUS) missionary who devoted 15 years of his life in the 1920s and 1930s to the literary movement as the chief editor of the Christian Literature Society of Korea(CLS). His missionary ministry in Korea over the period of 29 years can be divided into two parts: the first 14 years that started in 1909 witnessed him serving as the field minister in the eastern Jeonbuk Province, and he moved to Seoul in 1923 and began to serve as the representative translator of Korean Church. In was in the spring of 1924 that he started to take care of editing at CLS. It was the time when Korean Church, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of missionary in the nation, most needed a high quality literary movement for further growth. As a second-generation literary minister following Gale of PCUSA(북장로교) and Hardie of MS(남감리교), Clark had to answer the call of the times. He invested a lot of time in translating major Christian books in English into Korean. He translated total 29 books for approximately six and a half years from May, 1930. He also edited ten books and planned four books during the period. In total, 43 books were either translated or published thanks to his hard work. In addition, he performed various editing duties at CLS. Entering the 1930s, the supports from the missionary departments plunged due to the Great Depression. It was thus inevitable that the management situation of CLS grew even worse. Fortunately total 30 Christian books were published not only in the former half of the 1930s but also during 1935~38 when Clark was in charge of CLS management including editing, operation, and publication. William Clark, a PCUS missionary, made contributions to Korean Church by serving ministry in the eastern Jeonbuk Province and engaging in document translation, publication, and circulation.
