영화 사운드디자인의 내러티브 요소 연구

초록
종합예술인 영화의 예술적 가치는 영화를 구성하는 모든 영상기법의 가치를 통하여 완성된다. 영상기법으로써의 사운드디자인 역시 영화의 예술적 완성도를 높이는데 기여한다 할 수 있으며, 실제로 작업 현장에서 많은 실험들을 통해 사운드디자인의 예술적 가치의 가능성을 넓혀가고 있다. 학문 분야 또한 많은 연구들이 사운드디자인의 예술성을 피력하고 있다. 하지만 여전히 사운드디자인은 총체적이고 구체적인 이해와 연구 방법론을 찾지 못하고 있다. 사운드가 중요하다는 인식을 넘어 왜 그러한지, 또한 어떻게 하는 것인지에 대한 논의는 찾기 어렵다. 이 논문은 영화의 예술적 가치를 높이기 위한 사운드디자인의 가치와 방법론의 체계화를 시도한다. 이를 위해 사운드를 통한 내러티브 전달의 역할이 무엇이고 그 표현 요소가 무엇인지를 도출해 보고자 했다. 영화의 예술성에 대한 연구와 내러티브 구조에 대한 이해를 통해 사운드디자인의 예술성을 정보와 감정과 의미의 전달로 구분하여 정의하고, 이를 실제 영화 속에서 적용된 사례들을 분석해 보았다. 내러티브의 인물과 사건과 배경에 관한 정보를 담아내는 사례들을 영화 속에서 찾아보았고, 같은 전쟁 장면에서 내러티브가 담고자 하는 감정에 따라 어떻게 사운드지다인 방법론이 달라지는지를 살펴보았으며, 내러티브에 함축된 의미가 어떠한 방식으로 표출되고 있는지를 분석해보았다. 실 사례 조사를 통해 사운드디자인이 영화 내러티브의 정보적, 감정적, 의미적 표현에 중요한 역할을 담당해야함을 확인했고 구체적 방법론을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
The full artistic value of a film can only be achieved when all cinematic techniques employed in the film are used to pursue artistic values. Accordingly, sound design should be considered to have a narrative role to contribute to the film’s artistic value. However, arguments for what that role is and how it should be practiced have rarely been discussed academically. This study aims to reaffirm the important but underappreciated role of sound design in filmmaking while also defining the narrative elements of sound design. Definitions of the artistic value of cinema and narrative structure were investigated, and the role of cinematic techniques and the elements of narrative were defined as a collection of information, emotion, and ideas organized and presented in the form of a designed audio-visual experience. The narrative elements were analyzed through a case study of various narrative films. The critical role played by sound design in constructing the narrative in these films was identified, and the methodology for implementing each narrative role of sound design was also identified.
