전통 꽃담의 상징성에 대한 디자인 제안

초록
한 국가의 문화와 생활양식은 의식주에서 나온다. 그 중 주거공간은 그 지역의 기후와 지형적 조건, 정서 등을 대변하는 역할을 하기에 문화와 가장 밀접하다. 그러므로 우리나라 주거공간인 한옥 역시 한국인의 본질을 보여주는 공간이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 한옥은 한국적 이미지를 각인시킬 수 있는 특성과 개성이 담긴 미적요소가 있어 단순한 주거공간의 역할뿐 아니라 내외국인들의 관광과 체험을 하기위한 장소로 쓰이기도 한다. 우리의 한옥에는 집을 둘러싸고 있는 소박하고 특색 있는 담이 있다. 담은 오래전부터 외부 위험요소로부터 사람과 재물을 보호하며 안과 밖의 공간구획을 하였으나, 오늘날에는 단절된 소통을 되살리고자 담을 허무는 실정이다. 그러나 한국의 담 중에는 아름다운 꽃담이 있다. 꽃담은 담의 역할보다는 가옥 내에 아름다운 장식요소로써 벽사나 기원 등의 의미를 담고 있으며 그 자체로 미적가치를 지니고 있다. 때문에 우리 전통 꽃담을 예술로써 접근하여 생활공간에 설치함으로써 인간과 자연이 소통할 수 있는 역할로 변화시킬 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 예술적 표현매개를 꽃담으로 설정하여, 꽃담의 이론적 고찰과 함께 현대에 활용된 사례분석을 통해 당위성을 모색하였다. 이를 바탕으로 꽃담이 가지고 있는 여러 가지 문양과 의미가 일맥상통하는 연구자의 민화를 활용한 화조화 도판작품과 조합시켜 현대에 활용할 수 있는 방안을 제안하고자 한다. 이 두 소재를 조합함으로써 한국적 특색을 강하게 띄는 새로운 공공예술로써의 작품이 구현될 것이며, 이것을 시작으로 현대에 획일화되고 있는 꽃담의 예술성이 다양하게 창조될 수 있기를 기대해본다.
Abstract
The basis of national culture and life-style is derived from food, clothing, and housing. Of these, housing spaces are closest to culture as well as being extremely individual spaces and they represent weather, geologic conditions, and emotion. Likewise, Han-ok, the Korean traditional housing space, shows the nature of Koreans. Han-ok usually has a flowered wall surrounding the house. As contemporary Han-ok is used as a space for tourism and is an experience for domestic and international people beyond the role of being a simple residence, it requires aesthetic elements with individuality and character to highlight the Korean image rather than simply being practical. Therefore, this study proposed a wall of flowers for this purpose. A wall is designed to protect from external danger and divide inside from outside. However, as they are being pulled down to promote communication, its concept and meaning is also disappearing. A variety of patterns carved on flowered-walls have meaning in apotropaic rituals or prayer as well as inherent aesthetic value. So, a wall can be approached as art and its role should be changed into a role for communication through a traditional flowered-wall. Therefore, this study aims to speculate on reasons for flowered-walls through a theoretical examination and case study, setting it up as an artistic representing medium. For this purpose, diverse patterns used for walls were combined with ceramic tiles with flower and bird patterns for practical use. It is expected that a new work of public art with Korean characteristics can be realized by combining the two materials and the artistic nature of a flowered-wall can be created with diversity.
